BPR came a close second in the BBC housing competition to design 20 new townhouses as part of the huge redevelopment of the former BBC Television Centre in White City, West London. Read more about the competition in the Architects Journal here. ‘The Echelon’ comprises two differing typical houses which have varying characters. The unique identity of each side of the Green reflect that the houses may be aimed at different markets. These characters respond to the strikingly varying context on either side of the site - from the Victorian housing of Frithville Gardens to the symbol of urban London - the elevated circle line on the viaduct.Though different inside, spatially and materially, the houses are united in character and appearance addressing the Urban Village Green to create a unified terrace character. The Urban Village Green is re-imagined as a delightful communal space.
