DASH-HOUND SOLD IN THE CHARITY AUCTION AT THIS YEARS BARKITECTURE EVENT FOR A RECORD BREAKING £7000!
Birdsportchmouthrussum architects create 'Dash-hound' the kinetic kennel for the discerning modern family.
Dogs have a wonderful fascination with propulsion and speed; often as an enthusiastic car passenger with their head projecting from the window, or on a motorcycle or bicycle, perched on a paddleboard or even under their own steam upon a skateboard.
Their love of travel and speed inspired our Dash-hound design.
Special thanks to master craftsmen @karllewinmaker for his help with the fabrication of the fibre glass chassis, and cross stitch maestro’s Billy & Jenny for their gloriously Italian leather over coat.
The world's only 3-in-1 chair.
EXHIBITED AT BIRDSPORTCHMOUTHRUSSUM STUDIO / GALLERY ON THURSDAY 18th JULY 2024!
BirdsPortchmouthRussum Architects hosts Christopher Stead’s London Exhibition for MATRJOSKA, the world’s only 3-in-1 chair. Design as “the riddle of a solution” remains Christopher’s criterion of predilection, and underpins the conception of MATRJOSKA, his first model of nesting chairs to undergo prototype improvements - currently in the third variant.
Christopher Stead explains-
All elements for the three chairs nesting within the single armchair are derived from half panels of differing formats. This is the riddle that needed solving - to exploit efficiently both square format ply panels and rectangular format VALCHROMAT panels.
Through judicious templating, the components for all three chairs are cut from a single sheet.
The name derives from the Russian doll that conceals ever smaller lookalikes within itself - a concept quite distinct from strictly identical stacking chairs. Prevalent in industrial production, the latter can typically be only used individually, hence condemning the stored pile to useless encumbrance of space, an eyesore indeed in that very configuration.
Inversely MATRJOSKA is designed to liberate, enhance and embellish whatever space gives it pride of place in its nested or un-nested states.
La Chaise GIGOGNE is promoted as a signature brand grouping together similar projects, using different materials, for ulterior commercial production by third party dealers.

Architects’ Journal - “Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects has won a ‘cutting edge Barkitectural competition’ for a new kennel design – beating big names such as Foster + Partners, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Hopkins”
Goodwood - “The winner was Birds Portchmouth Russum Architects with Bonehenge, sold for £2,500 in the Bonhams Auction on Sunday 29 May at Goodwoof. A little palace for cocker-spaniel, Illy, the challenge was to create something sustainable, provide generous lighting and harvest fresh rainwater for her dog bowl.”

The proposal for 44 Reigate Hill Flats has been granted planning permission!
The scheme transforms an existing car park brownfield site, providing much needed high quality residential accommodation in Reigate town centre.
The new building, comprising of three apartments, is designed to respond to its context and sit sensitively within its leafy setting.
The form of the building creates an elegant and sensitive arrangement with set backs, curves and openings all designed in response to the surrounding buildings. The building is composed of three curved walls wrapping around the corners which bring fluidity and interest to the form whilst containing the building footprint and reducing impact on neighbours.
These are punctuated by timber walls and planes of obscured glass which give lightness and delight to the composition for the residents of Fileturn House and The Dell.

The new 4 storey house in Highgate maximises the potential of the narrow site to add a contemporary addition to the eclectic villas along Wood Lane. The traditional relationship of living and sleeping accommodation is inverted with the bedroom set at garden level and the living area elevated above. The double height living level contains an open plan kitchen /dining / living space with an elevated crystalline conservatory on the south side and an external terrace above the entrance.
The Garden and Entrance level plinth is constructed with engineering brick to respond to its earth retaining requirements. The living area element was prefabricated off site and craned in. The living element is made by cold formed timber and resin boat building technology which ensures quality and space efficient construction.

Modern practice whose most recent country house success was Downley House, an original sequence of differently shaped buildings that incorporated the ruined walls and set within the existing walls of an earlier house, located in a hidden valley in the South Downs AONB.
