The  Bovis Lend Lease & Architects’ Journal Prize for Architecture at this year's Royal Academy Summer Exhibition has been awarded to Birds Portchmouth Russum for two housing projects, Highlands Housing, Jersey and Wood Lane, Private House in London. The Highlands scheme is a collaboration with Richard Le Sueur, a leading architect based in Jersey who recently completed the celebrated El Tico beach restaurant.

We visited the show on the weekend and it feels like one of the strongest in years.  Many thanks to Piers Gough and Alan Stanton for putting it together.

The show is on until the 15th of August - go and see it if you can!

House at Wood Lane under construction

Birds Portchmouth Russum's design for the house at 6 Wood Lane is under construction.  The masonry lower half of the house is almost complete, and the pre-fabricated timber upper sections were recently craned into place, creating the fabulous space visible in the photo above.

Downley House CLT erected

The cross laminated timber (CLT) structure of Downley House, fabricated by Eurban in Switzerland,  commences on site this week. The CLT was CNC machine cut complete with door and window openings and penetrations for services, and brought over to the UK in lorries.  This modern method of construction is growing more popular over here in the UK, and its easy to see why.  Its sustainable, strong, flexible and the entire structure for a house like Downley can go up in a few weeks.
