Richard has particular specialist understanding of developing beautiful architecture in sensitive locations, whether it is an outstanding rural setting such as Downley House or a historically important urban setting such as Cannon Brewery.  In recent years Richard has led the practice’s approach to community consultation in developing projects such as Coram’s Fields and Burneside Vision.

Since establishing Birds Portchmouth Russum, Richard has contributed to the design of all projects with a particular focus on the masterplanning, residential and cultural projects. Richard played a major role in the realisation of exquisite award-winning projects such as Voss St live/work and the iconic Avenue de Chartres car park.

Richard’s passion for raising the quality of the built environment is also exercised outside of the practice in his commitment to being Deputy Chair for the Design South+East Panel and Chair for the Islington Design Panel. He is also a member of a number of review panels across London and has judged prestigious international competitions.
